Bring the powerful energy of Scandinavian prehistory into your home.
This unique wall decal is a precise reproduction of a millennia-old rock carving, also known as a petroglyph (Hällristning), from the Swedish region of Bohuslän. During our own journey through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tanum, we were able to experience these mystical places first-hand. They are true, palpable places of power.
Back then, over 3,000 years ago during the Nordic Bronze Age – at a time when the pyramids were being built in Egypt – people carved these symbols into the bare granite rock. Although the drawings with their clean lines sometimes seem almost as carefree as if they came from the pen of children, their simplicity is deceptive: During the same epoch, these people created highly complex, filigree bronze jewelry. It was a highly advanced culture full of magic and deep spirituality.
Where heaven, earth, and water merge
The sites in Bohuslän are located inland today, but during the Bronze Age, the sea level was much higher. These rock carvings were always located directly by the water (sea or lakes) and always on elevated, open cliffs. They were positioned so that they could be seen from afar from a boat. They were sacred places where all four elements met: The solid earth of the granite, the endless water, the whipping wind of the air, and the fire of the ritual sacrificial sites.
The heritage of the Viking ancestors
This symbolism is frequently mistaken for pure Viking art. In fact, this boat is nearly 2,000 years older than the Viking Age! Yet, this is where the origin lies: It is the direct ancestors of the Vikings who immortalized themselves here. The later Norsemen were undoubtedly inspired by the stories, shipbuilding methods, and rituals of these early explorers, inheriting their deep respect for the sea. It shows the untamed courage of adventurers who ventured out onto the open, unpredictable sea in simple plank boats.
The spiritual meaning of the Sun Ship
In Bronze Age mythology, the ship was a sacred sun ship. It was believed that this mystical boat pulled the sun through the dark underworld at night, allowing it to rise safely in the east the next morning. The boat is accompanied by ritual figures raising sacred lurs (bronze horns) or ceremonial paddles into the air to invoke the gods for fertility and protection. The two dots on the left and right (so-called cup marks) were considered symbols of power, blessing, and connection to the cosmos.
This Scandinavian wall decal is a beautiful, mystical wall decoration that carries the millennia-old power of our ancestors into your rooms. Perfect for the living room, bedroom, or home office to visualize focus, courage, and positive energy.
