The five Platonic Solids are unique, characterized by their convex shape (no concave corners), identical faces, and the same number of faces meeting at each vertex. These regular polyhedra have played a significant role in mathematics, geometry, art, architecture, and symbolism, captivating scholars and artists alike.
Named after the Greek philosopher Plato (427–347 BCE, a student of Socrates), these cosmic shapes were described in his work Timaeus, where he associated them with the elements. Plato believed these five solids were the fundamental building blocks of the material world, a concept still revered as only these five shapes underpin all creation.
Found throughout nature, the Platonic Solids are considered the building blocks of life. They form the basis of metals, crystals, and organic life. Visionaries like Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Kepler, and Pythagoras harnessed these creation patterns. Everything in the universe follows specific laws, patterns, and forms. Kepler used the Platonic Solids to find harmony in the celestial spheres, linking them to planetary orbits in his Mysterium Cosmographicum (The Cosmic Mystery, 1596), where he discovered planets move in ellipses, not circles. In Harmonice Mundi (Harmony of the World, 1619), he connected the solids to the four or five natural elements, convinced that planetary events and constellations influenced earthly occurrences, even predicting future events with remarkable accuracy.
In art, the Platonic Solids are frequently depicted, and in nature, they appear in crystals such as pyrite cubes, fluorite octahedra, alum octahedra, or garnet dodecahedra. In Waldorf schools, the topic of "Cubic Systems/Platonic Solids" is taught, as these shapes are part of the cubic crystal system, one of the seven crystallographic systems describing the structure of solids. Organic hydrocarbon molecules, icosahedral atomic clusters, radiolaria, snowflakes, and even viruses like adeno- and hepatitis A and C exhibit these forms. Plato noted, "Humans fall ill when they have too many icosahedra in their body."
Carbon molecules, known as fullerenes, form dodecahedral, hollow, highly symmetrical structures arranged in pentagons and hexagons. The most studied fullerene, Buckminsterfullerene, embodies a universal structural principle across micro- and macrocosms, consisting of 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons forming a truncated icosahedron, akin to a soccer ball, often called the "football molecule."
Each of the five Platonic Solids is associated with unique properties:
Tetrahedron: Composed of four triangles, linked to Fire, enthusiasm, and dynamism, connected to the Solar Plexus Chakra. It acts as a spiritual fire, cleansing energy fields and infusing them with light energy.
Hexahedron (Cube): Made of six squares, tied to Earth, stability, and grounding, linked to the Root Chakra. It fosters calm, focus, and healing within its energy field.
Octahedron: Formed of eight triangles, associated with Air, knowledge, and mediation, connected to the Heart Chakra. It helps broaden perspectives and find solutions.
Dodecahedron: Comprising twelve pentagons, linked to Ether (Prana, Chi, life energy) and the cosmos, associated with the Throat Chakra, symbolizing light, love, and unity consciousness. It offers protection from harmful energies and boosts vitality.
Icosahedron: Made of twenty triangles, tied to Water, sensitivity, and devotion, connected to the Sacral Chakra. It promotes purification, balance, protection, and clarity.

I am Carola Stober, a graduate media artist and founder of wandalas. I love sacred geometry, spirituality, and symbols from all over the world. Here at wandalas, you will find a constantly growing selection of lovingly designed and researched spiritual and magical motifs as wall tattoos, postcards, posters, iron-on transfers, and window films for over 10 years now.
My team and I wish you a lot of fun discovering and shopping!
With your purchase, you support our small business, which the founder established to spread knowledge about sacred geometry and spiritual teachings, such as the law of attraction, and to support people with it. Read our story here.
Many of our products are made especially for you after receiving the payment.
Our texts are lovingly written by our copywriter and included in every shipment. This way, you can always read about the meaning of the symbols and motifs.
All symbols are carefully researched before we add them to the shop.
Sustainability is important to us: We use materials for our products that are produced with sustainability and environmental care in mind.
Delivery depends on the size and is carried out with Deutsche Post, or as a parcel with DHL GOGREEN (CO2-neutral shipping). You will receive larger shipments packaged in sturdy cardboard boxes.
