The term "Reiki" is a Japanese wisdom composed of two syllables: "Rei" (Spirit, Soul, Miracle) and "Ki" (Energy, Heart, Nature, Feeling). Loosely translated, Reiki means "Universal Life Energy"—the force from which all life originates. In Reiki practice, the energy system (Aura, Chakras, Meridians) is recharged, activating self-healing powers to dissolve blockages and bring deep relaxation.
Dr. Usui’s Discovery Dr. Mikao Usui experienced enlightenment during a 21-day fasting meditation on the sacred Mount Kurama. There, he received the Reiki symbols (Sho Ku Rei, Sei He Ki, Hon Sha Se Sho Nen, and the Master Symbol Dai Komio), developing them into a spiritual healing system. However, Dr. Usui realized that while people enjoyed the physical healing, they often fell back into old patterns. He understood that true healing requires active participation. To address this, he developed the Five Principles (Gokai) for physical and spiritual health:
-
Just for today, do not be angry.
-
Just for today, do not worry.
-
Be grateful for the many blessings.
-
Earn your living honestly.
-
Be kind to every living being.
What Reiki Is and Isn’t
-
Reiki is NOT: A religion, a belief system, hypnosis, or mind control. It is not limited to the sick or a select few.
-
Reiki IS: An easy-to-learn technique applicable safely to everyone, everywhere. It is a unique, transformative experience that activates, restores, and harmonizes natural energy. It complements medical and other therapies perfectly.
