This photograph was taken during the summer solstice—also called midsummer or Litha—the shortest night and longest day of the year. Nature is in full bloom, the sun reaches its highest point, and from this moment on the days slowly begin to shorten again, even though the warmest days are still ahead.

The summer solstice is traditionally a festival of fire, celebrated with rituals, dancing, flowers, roses, blossom wreaths, incense, ripe fruit, bright colors, red and white candles, and healing plants—especially St. John’s wort.

Like the winter solstice, the summer solstice is a time when polarity becomes especially visible (connected to the seven hermetic principles). It is a powerful moment for meditation, reflection and exploring the two sides of any situation.
