Bowl of Hygieia – the classic healing symbol as a privacy film
This design shows the Bowl of Hygieia, one of the oldest and most important symbols of the healing arts. In Greek mythology, Hygieia is the goddess of health, and her name literally means “health.” The modern word hygiene is derived from her.
She is traditionally depicted with a serpent drinking from a bowl — a symbol of remedy, purity, vital energy and holistic health.
The serpent represents wisdom, intuition and renewal in many cultures, as it regularly sheds its old skin. In pharmacy, the Bowl of Hygieia stands for the healing substance itself and has been used as the official symbol of pharmacists since the 1950s.
Connection to Asclepius and the Rod of Asclepius
Hygieia is the daughter of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine. Sacred serpents were said to live in his sanctuaries, and their presence was associated with healing.
Asclepius is depicted with the well-known Rod of Asclepius — a serpent coiled around a staff. The staff symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth, spiritual guidance and the power of healing.
Although this design shows the Bowl of Hygieia (and not the Rod of Asclepius), both symbols are historically and conceptually linked. Because of this connection, they are widely used as signs for medical, therapeutic and naturopathic environments — and both terms are relevant in modern terminology and SEO.
Inspired by Samuel Hahnemann
The design of this privacy film was inspired by a historical memorial stone dedicated to the German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843), the founder of homeopathy.
In some representations, the Bowl of Hygieia appears with a serpent and sometimes even with a floating hexagram above the serpent’s head — symbols of clarity, protection and healing energy.
I translated this timeless and clear symbolism into a modern, harmonious line design.
