Discover the powerful healing essence of Tormentil (Potentilla erecta), known in German as Blutwurz — a remarkable medicinal plant whose deep red root reveals its name and signature. When cut, the rhizome turns an intense red, symbolizing both its blood-stopping properties and its strong connection to vitality, protection, and grounding.

I photographed this “little mighty one” at the shore of a Swedish lake using a macro lens. Tormentil loves moist environments such as wetlands, bogs, and damp meadows, reflecting its traditional use for fungal skin issues and possibly Candida. Historically, it was also called Tormentilla, derived from tormentum (Latin for “pain”), because it was widely used to ease pain and soothe digestive discomfort.

Named Medicinal Plant of the Year 2024, Tormentil is valued for its strong astringent, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and wound-healing properties. With the highest tannin concentration among Central European medicinal plants, it is traditionally used for:

• sore throat & mouth inflammations
• aphthae & gum bleeding
• diarrhea, colitis ulcerosa & digestive inflammation
• menstrual discomfort
• skin fungus & poorly healing wounds
• burns, frostbite, fissures & bleeding injuries

The plant’s red root represents willpower, grounding, fire, and transformation in the doctrine of signatures. Its radiant yellow blossom symbolizes life force, vitality, and solar energy.

Although Tormentil belongs to the rose family — which normally produces five petal flowers — this one blooms with four petals. In a meditative artistic flow, I revealed the flower’s sacred geometry: the number four, the square, and the cube (hexahedron). These forms symbolize stability, manifestation, groundedness, safety, the four elements, and the root chakra (“I am”).

The cube, one of the Platonic Solids, represents Earth, structure, clarity, and inner strength. Its energy supports concentration, order, grounding, and healing.
